"The Pacific"

Tony and I really enjoy learning about the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our liberty and the freedom of others. We loved watching Band of Brothers and have really anticipated the start of The Pacific, which starts tomorrow night. For the last 6 weeks, I have been reading the three books that the mini-series will be based on: With the Old Breed by E.B. Sledge (fantastic book!), Helmet for my Pillow by Robert Leckie and I'm Staying with My Boys by Jim Proser. In fact, the copy of the book by Jim Proser was sent to me by a man who grew up in the same hometown as John Basilone (Raritan, New Jersey) and he wrote a short note on a post-it on the inside cover of the book expressing his belief that John Basilone was a true hero. If you have ANY interest in the Pacific front of WWII, read E.B. Sledge's book.

Here is the trailer for The Pacific. (the link is back up)

I am so grateful for these young boys who risked it all so that our country could remain free. You know where I'll be tomorrow night. On my couch. With a box of tissues.

I am going to have some really good reading time starting this week. So I am putting these books on my list! Sounds great!

In DC this week there was a reunion at my hotel for World War II vets of the Pacific. The WASP pilots (Women's Airforce Service Pilots) were also there getting an award. I couldn't keep a smile off my face or a tear out of my eye thinking of them and everything they sacrificed. Tyler is also reading those books. I might have to read them when he is done.

Thanks for the reading list and the TV tip! But rats! I already missed the first episode. World War II history is a favorite of mine. I agree with the man who wrote on the post-it note: they were heroes.

I love the history from Pacific. I am not a good reader so maybe the tv show will be my best option. I have read the book The Little Girl With The White Flag and enjoyed it.

Even after living in both the Pacific and Europe I prefer the Pacific. I have been to ground zero at Nagasaki. Have you been to Hickim AFB? I would love to live there but my favorite thing there is all the bullet holes remain in all the buildings on base from the war. I hope while living in Korea we can take the kids to both Japan and Hawaii so they can learn and see.

Do you have the basketball games on?
